The tour of the Haute-Sûre lake

Luxembourg's main drinking water reservoir, but also a true paradise for water sports, recreation and nature experience, the Lac de la Haute-Sûre is located a few kilometres from Wiltz. Visit the impressive dam at Esch-sur-Sûre, which is the origin of the lake, and then enjoy the natural beaches at Lultzhausen, Liefrange or Boulaide for a range of water sports such as swimming, canoeing, diving, windsurfing and sailing - or simply relax by the water.

If you love long walks, the "Circuit du Lac" offers you the opportunity to discover the magnificent views of the lake, the unique flora and fauna and the small picturesque villages. It consists of two parts of 27 and 16.5 km respectively and allows you to discover the Haute-Sûre lake in all its facets.

You may have already heard that Wiltz has a castle dating from the 13th century, but did you know that there is also a magnificent 2.5 hectare public garden, the house where Michel Rodange wrote the national epic 'De Renert', impressive monuments and iconic villas testifying to the history of the former industrial town?

Follow the signs of the two signposted cultural trails which will guide you to all the attractions of Wiltz. Explanatory signs provide information on the various sights. The yellow trail focuses on the upper town and shows you 21 curiosities. On the 3 km long trail, you will also learn why Wiltz is called the "Martyrdom City".

You can then follow the red path, which takes you over 4.5 kilometres to the places to see in the lower town, culminating in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima. Here you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the whole city.

Understanding the reality of the Battle of the Bulge

In the winter of 1944-1945, the villages of northern Luxembourg were the scene of fierce fighting.

The "Schumann's Eck", 6 kilometres from Wiltz, was a strategically important crossroads, but it became one of the cruellest battlefields in Luxembourg.

Today, there is the national liberation monument and a 3-kilometre memorial trail through the Schumann's Eck forest, along former trenches that have been partly reconstructed. Life-size historical photos of American and German soldiers as well as Luxembourg civilians illustrate the events of the time at various stations. The path is particularly impressive when it has snowed, making the experience even more moving.

The town of Wiltz was particularly affected by the bombings and attacks of the Second World War, earning it the title of "Martyred City". Numerous monuments still bear witness to this period, such as the National Monument of the Strike of 31 August 1942, a 23-metre high tower and memorial to the general strike that started in Wiltz. The strike led by local industrial workers, businessmen and civil servants was a protest movement against the introduction of compulsory military service by the Nazi oppressor.

The German reaction to the strike was harsh: 21 strike leaders were sentenced to death and executed a few days later, hundreds were arrested, some sent to rehabilitation camps and many families were deported.

The restored Sherman tank on the Ettelbruck road, the "American St. Nick" monument and the war memorial are other places of remembrance to honour the victims of the war.

The history of the Battle of the Bulge is also told in the dedicated museum in Wiltz Castle. Here, the pain and misery of the soldiers and the horrific destruction of the region are told with the use of photographs, documents, paintings and historical memorabilia.

Glamping : "luxury" camping in the middle of nature

While those who like the feel of the land will only need a small piece of land to pitch their tent, others are a little more demanding when it comes to their camping holiday. Glamping", the anglicism for "glamorous camping", combines comfort with a stay in the middle of nature. And in Wiltz, Camping-Park Kaul is the ideal address for 'luxury' camping.

Surrounded by forest, Camping Kaul has nine different types of accommodation to suit all tastes. The latest addition to the range of accommodation are the spacious wooden chalets "Ardenne", equipped with a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with shower and large covered terrace. No need to bring sheets and towels: everything is included in the price. You can even have breakfast delivered to your doorstep!

If you would rather sleep in a tent without the comfort of a chalet, take a look at the "Safari Lodges". Available in two variants, these spacious and beautifully furnished tents include a bathroom with a rain shower, a fully equipped kitchen, a mezzanine and a large covered terrace.

Purists and budget-conscious travellers will opt for the "Pod" or "Mega Pod", the small oval-shaped wooden cabins with low prices. Ideal for a cozy moment with your partner!

Romantic dinner with a view

What better way to end a busy day than with a good meal?

In Wiltz, you can choose the backdrop for your romantic dinner. Here are some suggestions:
  • Enjoy your meal with a view of Wiltz Castle? Then go to the Hotel-Restaurant Beim Schlass, which has one of the most beautiful terraces in the city and dishes for all tastes, and special menus adapted to the season. In case of bad weather, dine indoors in a setting renovated in 2018 with great attention to detail.
  • On the terrace of the Hotel-Restaurant Aux Tanneries de Wiltz, dine out of sight in a picturesque setting on the banks of the "Wiltz", the river that runs through the capital of the Ardennes. Relax and enjoy the local cuisine, prepared with local products, wines from the Luxembourg Moselle and local beers. Inside, the stone vaults and walls of this former tannery give a unique atmosphere.
  • L'endroit is the place to share a drink, a meal, a friendly and warm moment in the heart of Wiltz. This sommelier bar offers a refined menu of 3 to 6 courses. We also recommend that you ask for wine and food pairings!
